Record Stores in New York City

Village specialists, Brooklyn digging and Manhattan's dedicated CD and jazz stops.

New York rewards a record-shopping plan built around neighborhoods and formats. Greenwich Village, the East Village, Williamsburg and Greenpoint each offer several distinct stops, while specialist destinations elsewhere can justify a separate subway trip. The stores in this guide include dance-music shops, experimental catalogues, dedicated jazz sellers and broad used-record businesses. Choosing an area first makes it easier to spend time with those differences instead of crossing the city between every purchase.

A Greenwich Village route can connect Generation on Thompson, Village Revival on Bleecker and Record Runner on Jones. The East Village offers another compact set of choices: A-1 for used-record digging, Academy on East 12th, Limited to One for a smaller collectible selection and Ergot for experimental records and books. Downtown Music Gallery on Monroe Street is a further destination for listeners following exploratory music.

CD shoppers should use the format filter rather than assume every vinyl shop has a meaningful disc department. Academy's West 18th Street location is different from its East Village and Greenpoint branches; Westsider and BOOKOFF add other Manhattan options. Jazz Record Center is an upstairs specialist on West 26th. For current releases in Midtown, Rough Trade's Rockefeller Center location serves a different purpose from a used-stock afternoon downtown.

Across the East River, Greenpoint brings Academy Annex, Record Grouch, Captured Record Shop, Brooklyn Record Exchange and Razor-N-Tape into a useful neighborhood plan. Williamsburg and the surrounding Brooklyn streets offer Earwax, Superior Elevation, Face and several other stops, with distinct addresses that matter more than the broad Brooklyn label. Human Head's Brooklyn and Upper East Side branches also deserve separate expectations. Use the map to keep a route coherent, check official hours before travelling and contact a buyer before arriving with a collection. Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and the Williamsburg venue guides can help connect a chosen shopping area with a show.

Neighborhood routes

Greenwich Village and the East Village

Generation, Village Revival and Record Runner make a Greenwich Village group. A-1, Academy East Village, Limited to One and Ergot provide a separate East Village circuit. Combining the two is possible on foot, but leave room for browsing rather than counting the shops as quick stops.

Greenpoint and Williamsburg

Academy Annex, Record Grouch, Captured Record Shop, Brooklyn Record Exchange and Razor-N-Tape are useful Greenpoint anchors. Extend toward Williamsburg for other catalogues only after checking each address. Music Hall of Williamsburg and Brooklyn Bowl are relevant concert connections for the Williamsburg end.

A Manhattan specialist day

Academy West 18th, Jazz Record Center, Westsider and BOOKOFF serve different formats and musical interests. They are spread across Manhattan. Choose the department you need and use the subway between areas; an upstairs jazz shop and a Midtown chain should not be treated as one walkable cluster.
