Why it is worth visiting

Academy LPs is the vinyl-centered Academy operation, and the East Village shop is a different business from the classical and CD specialist on West 18th Street. It began in 2001 and moved to East 12th Street in 2008. The selection reaches from rock, jazz and soul into punk, metal, reggae, dance music and experimental records, so a used-record visit need not follow a single genre. The shop also buys collections, which helps explain why a physical browse can be more revealing than a fixed shopping list. This address works at the northern end of an East Village route through Limited to One, A-1, Stranded and Ergot. Choose a few of those shops according to what you collect, rather than rushing every bin in the neighborhood.

What you will find

New and used vinyl across many genres, with collectible records and tapes. Academy's Brooklyn Annex has its own location and inventory.

Genre strengths: Rock, Jazz, Soul, Punk, Metal, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Experimental
