The Weakerthans Recorded a Winnipeg Homecoming

The Weakerthans put a Winnipeg room in the title of their live album. Recorded in April 2009 and released in March 2010, Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre brought material from all four of the band’s studio albums into one hometown performance.

The arrangements expanded beyond the core group, adding trumpet, violin and additional vocals. The release includes both One Great City! and Left and Leaving, placing familiar songs alongside the sound of a band stretching them for the stage.

The venue name is more than a location credit. On an album by a Winnipeg band whose writing repeatedly returns to place, the Burton Cummings Theatre gives listeners a specific room to connect with the music.
