Fela Kuti’s Long-Form Night at Detroit’s Fox Theatre

Four pieces fill more than two hours on Fela Kuti’s Live in Detroit (1986). Recorded at the Fox Theatre on November 7, 1986, the album preserves a concert built around extended performances rather than a long list of short songs.
The programme includes “Just Like That,” “Confusion Break Bones,” “Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense” and “Beasts of No Nation.” Each recording runs roughly half an hour or longer. Fela’s official catalogue identifies the release as authorized by his estate and names the Detroit theatre as the recording location.
That scale is part of the document’s value. The Fox Theatre concert gives listeners sustained time inside the music, while the album’s title keeps the city attached to a specific night in Fela’s performing history.
