Southside Johnny’s Stone Pony Show Went Out on the Radio

Memorial Day weekend in 1976 brought Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes to the Stone Pony for a radio show that became part of the room’s defining history. The performance opened the summer season in Asbury Park and carried the Jukes’ music beyond the audience inside.
The Pony still identifies that broadcast as a landmark. For its fiftieth anniversary in 2024, the venue announced an August celebration specifically recalling the 1976 radio show, connecting the old summer-opening concert to a new gathering at summer’s end.
That return to the date says something about the room’s memory. Among decades of performances, this one retained a distinct identity: Southside Johnny, the Jukes, the beginning of summer and a Stone Pony audience joined by listeners elsewhere.
