Booking Paradise Rock Club was a gamble for Phish in January 1989. With the band still relatively unknown in Boston, managers John Paluska and Ben Hunter rented the room themselves for a January 26 show.
Tickets cost five dollars. Promotion helped, but the band’s official archive credits two Burlington friends with a decisive contribution: hiring a Greyhound bus to bring Vermont fans to Boston. The 650-capacity room sold out.
Phish had played in the area before, so this was not a literal Boston debut. The archive identifies it as the band’s first major Boston show, with recording notes calling it The Big Gig. Paradise provided a practical test of whether the following built in Vermont could help sustain a larger club appearance outside the band’s home base.
