A ten-night run at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre produced one of Neil Diamond’s best-known live records. Hot August Night was recorded on August 24, 1972, during that sold-out engagement, giving a single evening a life far beyond the amphitheater.
The album reached number five in the United States. In Australia, it spent 29 weeks at number one, according to Diamond’s official release history. A concert recorded in a Los Angeles hillside venue became a particularly durable record on the other side of the Pacific.
The Greek connection also outlasted the original release. Hot August Night became the starting point for later live albums under the same name, preserving that 1972 engagement as a recurring reference in Diamond’s recording career.
