The Doors’ Hollywood Bowl Night Came Back into Focus

On July 5, 1968, The Doors played the Hollywood Bowl with cameras and multitrack recording equipment preserving the performance. Decades later, that material allowed the concert to be revisited with substantially more of the original evening intact.
For the 2012 release Live at the Bowl ’68, the film was restored from camera negatives and engineer Bruce Botnick returned to the original audio recordings. Work on three previously omitted performances made the complete concert available for the first time.
The result gives the Bowl an unusually detailed place in the band’s live history. Rather than surviving only through a setlist or a recollection, the performance remains something viewers can watch, with the restored material filling gaps left by earlier editions.
