The Derek Trucks Band Put Georgia Theatre on Record

The October 23, 2003 performance by The Derek Trucks Band at Georgia Theatre became a document listeners could return to: the double album Live at Georgia Theatre, released in 2004.

The recording captures the group in Athens with singer Mike Mattison and a repertoire that moved through blues, soul and jazz. AllMusic’s account emphasizes the breadth of the music, rather than treating the concert simply as a showcase for Trucks’ guitar playing.

The artist identity matters. This is the Derek Trucks Band, a distinct group from the later Tedeschi Trucks Band. For Georgia Theatre, the album preserves an exact night and lineup inside the room. Its name became part of the band’s recorded catalogue, carrying the Athens connection well beyond the people who attended.
