The Avett Brothers Rang in a North Carolina New Year

The audience made an impression on The Avett Brothers at Raleigh’s PNC Arena on New Year’s Eve 2014. Remembering the show for Live, Vol. Four, Seth Avett described moments when the crowd seemed to be singing to the band as much as the band was singing to them.

The resulting record put newer material, including “Satan Pulls the Strings” and “Rejects in the Attic,” beside “Laundry Room” and “I and Love and You.” “Auld Lang Syne” kept the occasion audible in the running order.

The arena is now Lenovo Center, but this recording carries the older name and a distinctly local celebration. A large building full of North Carolina listeners became, in Seth’s account, a gathering of friends and neighbors loud enough to reverse the direction of the performance.
