Record Stores in Chicago

Used CDs and LPs, dance-music specialists, jazz catalogues and neighborhood circuits.

Chicago offers several useful ways to build a record-shopping day: compare used records and CDs across broad catalogues, head to a specialist for dance music or jazz, or spend an afternoon with the shops in one neighborhood. Reckless has three distinct locations, while Shuga and Signal also operate separate branches. The map and profiles identify the actual address behind each recommendation.

Wicker Park provides a concentrated starting point, with Reckless and Shuga on Milwaukee, plus Signal and Dusty Groove on Ashland. Those stores do different things well, so choose a few that fit your interests instead of expecting identical stock. Lakeview offers another Reckless branch and Gramaphone's dance-music focus. Farther north, Rattleback in Andersonville and Laurie's Planet of Sound in Lincoln Square make strong reasons to plan a physical-media afternoon beyond the central shopping corridors.

The specialist choices reach across the city. Meteor Gem focuses on heavy music, Bucket O' Blood combines records with genre books, and 606 and Pinwheel give the Pilsen area two distinct stops. Jazz and blues shoppers can compare Dusty Groove's catalogue with Bob's Blues & Jazz Mart, then look at the individual selections and locations of Hyde Park Records and Out of the Past. These are purposeful journeys between neighborhoods rather than one convenient downtown loop.

CDs remain a useful planning filter here. Reckless, Rattleback, Laurie's and other listed stores provide CD selections, while some vinyl specialists do not. Buying policies also vary: a used-record catalogue is not evidence that a store accepts every collection, and appointment or contact instructions deserve attention. Use the city filters to narrow the list, then read the practical notes for each stop. The venue connections are equally local. Metro fits a Lakeview plan, Thalia Hall is useful for Pilsen, and the Chicago Theatre belongs with the Loop rather than a North Side shopping route.

Local Tip from Dan…

Reckless, Shuga and Dusty Groove are all about a 10 min walk from one another and while you’re in the area you can also walk past the storefront where the record store in High Fidelity was filmed.

Neighborhood routes

Wicker Park and Ashland

Reckless and Shuga provide Milwaukee Avenue choices, with Signal and Dusty Groove on Ashland. Empty Bottle is farther west on Western Avenue. Treat a show there as an added walking or transit leg, not as another storefront beside the Milwaukee shops.

Lakeview, Lincoln Square and Andersonville

Reckless Lakeview and Gramaphone form one useful area. Laurie's Planet of Sound in Lincoln Square and Rattleback in Andersonville are separate northern destinations. Pick a neighborhood for the main browse and connect another by transit if its CD or record selection merits the trip.

Pilsen, the Loop and farther south

606 and Pinwheel provide a Pilsen route with Thalia Hall as a relevant concert connection. Reckless in the Loop serves a different part of the day. Hyde Park Records and Beverly Records are farther south and should be planned as destinations rather than squeezed into a downtown walk.
