Will Butler Put Two Montreal Nights into Friday Night

Will Butler’s live album Friday Night starts with Montreal. Its opening track, “Encore – Tell Me We’re All Right,” was recorded at Bar le Ritz during his March 28–29, 2015 shows.

“Something’s Coming” came from the same dates. The liner notes credit Tyler Crawford and Mark Lawson with recording those performances, while most of the album came from Chicago’s Lincoln Hall that June.

The distinction gives the Montreal room a specific role in the finished record. Bar le Ritz supplied two selections, including the unusual decision to open an album with an encore. Released in June 2016, Friday Night assembled its running order across both cities, putting one piece of the Montreal ending at the very beginning.
