Wilco, Cain’s Ballroom and Ashes of American Flags

Wilco made Cain’s Ballroom one of five American rooms at the centre of the 2008 concert film Ashes of American Flags. The Tulsa performance appears alongside shows at Tipitina’s, the Ryman, 9:30 Club and Mobile Civic Center.
The film follows the band across changing geographic and historical settings, showing how the same songs meet different stages and audiences. Recorded in 2008 and released in 2009, it treats the venues as part of the story rather than interchangeable backdrops.
That approach gives Cain’s Ballroom a clear role in the finished film. Its dance-hall history and Tulsa setting help define the road Wilco was documenting.
