Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto

The Horseshoe Showcase That Helped Sign the Tragically Hip

The Tragically Hip’s Horseshoe Tavern story turns on a quick change of plans. In guitarist Rob Baker’s account, MCA executive Bruce Dickinson first saw the band perform just one song at Massey Hall. He wanted to sign them and asked to see more.

A full showcase was arranged at the Horseshoe the following night. After that set, Dickinson offered the band a deal with MCA. Baker’s recollection gives the Queen Street room a precise role in the band’s move toward a major-label career.

The sequence matters. Massey Hall caught the executive’s attention; the Horseshoe gave him a complete performance. For a band that had spent years working through Ontario rooms, the club became the setting where that accumulated live experience converted into a record offer.
