The Rolling Stones’ Secret Nights at the El Mocambo

On March 4 and 5, 1977, The Rolling Stones stepped into Toronto’s roughly 300-capacity El Mocambo for two secret shows. The booking was disguised under the name The Cockroaches, giving one of the world’s biggest touring bands a temporary return to club scale.
Four performances from the nights appeared on Love You Live later that year, but the full shape of the run remained harder to hear officially. Decades later, Live at the El Mocambo finally presented the complete March 5 set together with three tracks from March 4.
The story has become inseparable from the El Mocambo. Its size is the point: two nights in a small Toronto room produced a recording that carried the atmosphere of the club far beyond Spadina Avenue.
