Phish Turned MGM Grand into a Haunted House

For Halloween 2014 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Phish chose an unlikely source for its second set: Walt Disney Studios’ Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House. A record of eerie narration and sound effects became material for a band performance.

The official show archive identifies the set as an interpretation of that album. Its sequence includes The Dogs, Your Pet Cat, The Birds and Martian Monster, surrounded by more familiar Phish material in the evening’s first and third sets.

That choice gave the Las Vegas concert its particular identity. The source was not a conventional collection of rock songs to reproduce. MGM Grand became the place where Phish turned a haunted-house record into a full musical set, making the act of adaptation the centre of the Halloween show.
