Metallica Opened Chase Center with the Symphony Beside Them

Chase Center’s opening concert on September 6, 2019 paired Metallica with another San Francisco institution: the San Francisco Symphony. Twenty years after their original S&M collaboration, band and orchestra reunited for S&M2.
A second performance followed on September 8. Both nights supplied the resulting live release, giving the new arena a recorded opening chapter. The project also brought Michael Tilson Thomas into the proceedings, alongside the familiar combination of amplified band and symphonic ensemble.
The anniversary gave the booking its logic. Metallica could return to an established musical partnership while opening a room neither ensemble had played before. Chase Center began its concert life with musicians revisiting an idea large enough to require both of them.
