Doug Cox Put the Waverley Into a Cumberland Song

The Waverley Hotel is more than a room where musicians stop when they pass through Cumberland. It became part of the way one of the village’s own musicians wrote about home.

Doug Cox’s Cumberland Blues Dream places the Waverley inside its picture of the Vancouver Island community, referring to the venue and a soundcheck as part of the song’s setting. The track turns the pub into a piece of local geography that can be heard as well as visited. For a venue with deep roots in Cumberland’s music life, appearing inside a song about the town feels less like a cameo than another form of local history.
