The Rolling Stones’ Ten-Dollar Night at the Phoenix

The Rolling Stones played Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre on August 10, 2005, before taking A Bigger Bang onto a world tour. Tickets cost ten dollars, with wristbands and photo identification used to control entry to the club show.
Rough Justice opened the fourteen-song set. Back of My Hand and Keith Richards’ Infamy brought more of the coming album into the room, while Brown Sugar and Jumpin’ Jack Flash supplied familiar closing material. The Trews opened the evening.
The attraction was not simply seeing a stadium band at close range. Phoenix listeners heard new songs being tried in front of an audience before the larger tour began. The concert sits within Toronto’s long connection to the Stones as a place where preparation has occasionally become a small public show.
