Why it matters
Fillmore West was Bill Graham's San Francisco concert room at Market Street and South Van Ness Avenue, operating under that name from 1968 to 1971. It occupied the former Carousel Ballroom and was distinct from the Fillmore Auditorium on Geary Boulevard. Its recorded legacy includes the Grateful Dead's February–March 1969 performances. The historic name describes a particular room and era; it must not be confused with today's Fillmore or later events in the same building.
