Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers built songs around Petty's direct melodies, Mike Campbell's guitar and Benmont Tench's keyboards. American Girl and Refugee show how tightly the band could arrange a short rock song. Their 1997 Fillmore residency opened that approach into long sets of originals and covers, later documented on Live at the Fillmore 1997, with room for the musicians' wider influences.
