In January and February 1997, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers settled into San Francisco’s Fillmore for twenty shows. A club residency gave the band room to draw on its own catalogue and the music that had shaped it.
The later official release, Live at the Fillmore (1997), puts those strands together. Petty songs share space with covers, while Roger McGuinn and John Lee Hooker appear among the guests. The recording preserves a band using an extended stay to move beyond the shape of a single tour stop.
The Fillmore’s part in the story is the time it allowed. Night after night in one room made a different kind of event possible, with the residency itself becoming a chapter in the Heartbreakers’ history.
