The Smashing Pumpkins formed in Chicago in 1988 around Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky and Jimmy Chamberlin. Their records could move from shoegaze haze and psychedelic studio layering to heavy riffs and ornate pop; Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness made that range central to 1990s alternative rock.
