The New Mastersounds formed in Leeds in 1999 and built an international following around a lean quartet format of guitar, organ, bass and drums. Their sound draws from vintage soul-jazz, funk and boogaloo, but decades of touring, especially a long relationship with New Orleans Jazz Fest late nights, turned the band into a modern groove institution rather than a simple retro exercise.
