The Doobie Brothers formed in San Jose in 1970 and developed through two distinct hit-making eras: the guitar-driven, rootsy rock associated with Tom Johnston and the smoother soul-pop turn led by Michael McDonald's voice and keyboards. Across both, close harmonies and a rhythmic blend of rock, R&B and country remained the band's connective tissue.
