Nirvana

Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington and brought the Pacific Northwest underground into mainstream popular culture without sanding off its punk roots. Nevermind paired Kurt Cobain's sharply melodic songwriting with loud-quiet dynamics and abrasive guitar, while In Utero pushed back toward a rawer sound before the band's abrupt end in 1994.
