Mad Season brought Layne Staley, Mike McCready, Barrett Martin and John Baker Saunders together in Seattle in 1994. Their only completed studio album, Above, places Staley's voice over blues-based guitar and spacious percussion, including River of Deceit. Mark Lanegan added vocals to the record, and Live at the Moore captures the group extending those songs on stage in 1995.
