Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville in 1991 around acoustic guitar, saxophone, violin, bass and drums, giving its early songs a rhythmic language closer to jazz and world music than standard guitar rock. Relentless touring turned that flexible instrumentation and a constantly changing live repertoire into one of North America's most durable concert cultures.
