AJJ started in Phoenix with Sean Bonnette on acoustic guitar and Ben Gallaty on upright bass, recording first as Andrew Jackson Jihad. People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World set frantic folk-punk playing against anxious, darkly funny stories. Can't Maintain and Knife Man expanded the arrangements as the project developed into a full band.
