Preservation Hall live music venue in New Orleans, Louisiana

Rising Appalachia Framed a Set with New Orleans Standards

Rising Appalachia began its Live from New Orleans at Preservation Hall album with “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Near the other end of the sequence sits “St. James Infirmary,” followed by “Resilient.”

Between those familiar standards, the twelve-track record moves through songs including “Silver,” “Rivermouth” and “The Long Haul.” For sisters Leah and Chloe Smith’s Southern-rooted ensemble, the running order makes the meeting with New Orleans explicit in the music.

The album was released on November 11, 2022; its official listing does not give an exact performance date. What it does offer is a clearly framed set: a traditional opening, the band’s own repertoire through the middle, and another standard just before the final song. Preservation Hall is named on the cover, and the song choices help explain why.
