Phish’s Baker’s Dozen Made Madison Square Garden a Moving Target

Phish returned to Madison Square Garden thirteen times between July 21 and August 6, 2017. Across the Baker’s Dozen residency, the band played 26 sets and 237 songs without repeating one.

Staying in a single arena usually means the production stays put while audiences change. Here, the music had to change too. Every song played reduced the pool available for the remaining nights, making the sequence of shows part of the experience.

The complete run later became a 36-CD box set, alongside shorter curated editions. That archive preserves the scale of the undertaking: thirteen different concerts in one room, with the no-repeat decision connecting them. Madison Square Garden was the constant around which Phish kept changing the material.
