Green Day Played the New Album at Oakland’s Fox

On April 14, 2009, Green Day brought an entire new album to Oakland’s Fox Theater. The East Bay band performed 21st Century Breakdown in full before its release, making a last-minute local show into an extended introduction to the record.

The East Bay Express reported roughly 75 minutes devoted to the new material, followed by another hour of older favorites. The audience got both parts of the band’s working life: songs still waiting for their official release and songs the crowd already knew.

For the Fox, the night joined a local band with a local room at a moment when the music was still new. The album arrived onstage as a whole, before listeners could make their own habits around the record.
