On August 25, 1970, Elton John made his American debut at the Troubadour. Neil Diamond introduced him, and Elton took the stage with bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson.
The trio opened with “Your Song.” Elton’s official oral history remembers a performance that moved from the piano-led songs to the physical showmanship that became part of his reputation. The small West Hollywood club gave musicians, industry guests and concertgoers a close view of an artist new to American stages.
Robert Hilburn’s enthusiastic Los Angeles Times review appeared on August 27, two days after the debut. The concert and its reception became a turning point in Elton’s American career. For the Troubadour, the date remains a precise example of a small room introducing an artist to a much larger audience.
