Massey Hall, Toronto · January 19, 1971
Neil Young came back to Toronto with songs the audience knew and several they didn’t.
At Massey Hall on January 19, 1971, he played solo. “Down by the River” and “Ohio” were already out in the world. “Old Man,” “The Needle and the Damage Done” and “Heart of Gold” were still new, with Harvest yet to come. It was a homecoming, but he wasn’t spending the evening looking back.
One of the reasons to return to this recording is “A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold.” The songs appear together as a suite. Hearing “Heart of Gold” in that setting takes a little of the familiarity out of it, which is useful for a song most of us have heard so often.
Producer David Briggs wanted the Massey Hall recording released between After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Young was excited about the Harvest recordings and wanted that album out instead. The live album eventually arrived in 2007. Looking back, Young acknowledged that Briggs had a point.
The release gave Massey Hall a lasting place in Young’s recorded work. The Toronto audience had heard songs before they became standards. Decades later, listeners could hear those early arrangements for themselves, with the hall’s name right there on the cover.
