Why it matters
The Maple Leaf's story begins with a working band, not a celebrity cameo. Andrew Hall's Society Jazz Band played its opening night on February 24, 1974, then returned on Saturdays for seven years. The Oak Street room went on to become a home for New Orleans music across generations, with James Booker, Rebirth Brass Band and George Porter Jr. among the names in its history. Its importance lies as much in those repeated local relationships as in the famous visitors.
