Why it matters
Detroit's Grande Ballroom began as a jazz and big-band dancehall, with a sprung floor above Grand River Avenue storefronts. Its defining rock chapter began when Russ Gibb bought the building in 1966 and introduced psychedelic projections and touring acts alongside local bands. MC5, the Stooges, SRC and the Rationals helped establish its Detroit identity. The Detroit Historical Society dates its final show to New Year's Eve 1972. The room's later historic-register recognition preserves the importance of that short, influential concert era.
