Violent Femmes made acoustic instruments sound unsettled and confrontational: Gordon Gano's guitar and voice rub against Brian Ritchie's prominent bass and stripped-back percussion. Their 1983 debut contains Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off and Add It Up. Hallowed Ground followed with darker folk and gospel material, showing how much range the Milwaukee group could find without relying on conventional electric-rock arrangements.
