The Clash formed in London in 1976, with Joe Strummer and Mick Jones sharing songwriting and vocal duties. The terse punk of their debut gave way to the reggae, rockabilly and soul of London Calling and the sprawling experiments of Sandinista! Paul Simonon's bass and Topper Headon's drumming helped make those changes in rhythm a working part of the band, rather than occasional stylistic detours.
