Samara Joy grew up singing gospel in the Bronx before studying jazz at SUNY Purchase and winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Linger Awhile introduced her interpretations of jazz standards to a wider audience. On Portrait, she worked closely with her touring band and wrote lyrics for instrumental compositions, including Charles Mingus' Reincarnation of a Lovebird.
