Flea's bass and Anthony Kiedis' rhythmic vocals anchored the Red Hot Chili Peppers' early mix of funk and punk. Blood Sugar Sex Magik gave that sound both hard rhythmic edges and quieter songs such as Under the Bridge. Californication and By the Way brought more melody and layered guitar into the arrangements, extending the Los Angeles group's range without removing its rhythmic foundation.
