Lynyrd Skynyrd's first records put Ronnie Van Zant's conversational singing against interlocking guitars and Billy Powell's piano. Free Bird grows from a slow ballad into an extended instrumental, while Sweet Home Alabama builds around a tightly repeating riff. The Jacksonville band's original run ended after the 1977 plane crash; a later lineup returned with Johnny Van Zant singing his brother's songs alongside new material.
