Grand Funk Railroad began in Flint in 1969 with guitarist Mark Farner, drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher. Heavy bass and extended guitar arrangements drove the early power-trio records, including Closer to Home. The band later reached a wider radio audience with Brewer's We're an American Band and versions of The Loco-Motion and Some Kind of Wonderful.
