The Goo Goo Dolls began in Buffalo with a rougher punk and alternative-rock sound before Name brought John Rzeznik's acoustic writing to radio. Dizzy Up the Girl followed with Iris, Slide and Black Balloon, pairing unusual guitar tunings with broad melodic choruses. Bassist and co-founder Robby Takac's vocal contributions preserve another side of the band's earlier, more abrasive approach.
