Frank Sinatra treated a lyric as a spoken thought shaped by rhythm, holding back or moving ahead of the beat without losing the song. His Capitol albums with Nelson Riddle include the late-night ballads of In the Wee Small Hours and the buoyant Songs for Swingin' Lovers! Later work with Count Basie placed that phrasing against a harder-swinging band.
