Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary formed Butthole Surfers in San Antonio in 1981. Records such as Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac and Locust Abortion Technician pull punk apart with distorted voices, tape effects and lurching rhythms. The comparatively restrained Pepper brought them to rock radio in 1996. Their live reputation came from a much less orderly combination of noise, projections and unpredictable performance.
