Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet turned You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin' on a Prayer into the centrepieces of a melodic hard-rock catalogue. New Jersey followed with more guitar-driven choruses, while Keep the Faith brought a shift in texture and tone. Jon Bon Jovi's character-based writing later moved through pop and country influences without losing its emphasis on a memorable refrain.
