Billy Joel built his catalogue around piano, classic American pop forms and sharply observed New York characters. Piano Man established the songwriter persona, while The Stranger, 52nd Street and Glass Houses widened the sound through rock, jazz and soul influence; decades of arena shows turned those songs into a communal live repertoire.
