Legacy / Inactive

Big Mama Thornton was a powerful blues and R&B singer, drummer and harmonica player whose records became source material for rock and roll. Her 1952 recording of Hound Dog preceded Elvis Presley's hit version, while her own Ball and Chain was later transformed by Janis Joplin; Thornton's rough, commanding voice and stage presence were the constants.
