Brittany Howard, Heath Fogg, Zac Cockrell and Steve Johnson formed Alabama Shakes in Athens, Alabama, developing their songs in clubs before recording Boys & Girls. Hold On introduced Howard's grainy voice and the band's loose blend of soul and guitar rock. On Sound & Color, they worked with producer Blake Mills, adding stranger textures and more spacious arrangements without losing the rhythm section's weight.
