Washington, D.C. band 9353 formed in the early 1980s outside the city's dominant hardcore scene, building a darker post-punk sound from drum machines, jagged guitar and Bruce Hellington's theatrical vocals. Records including To Whom It May Consume and We Are Absolutely Sure There's No God leaned into repetition, abrasion and performance art rather than punk orthodoxy.
